You can use a dummy trail camera as a deterrent against thieves. Ideally, you should place it where it is clearly visible, so that it's obvious your property is well-protected, or use another fully functional unit and hide it. A thief will bypass the dummy and go where they think there is no trail camera. Alternatively, you can visibly install, for example, 10 trail cameras, with only one being functional, and only you will know which one is the real one. This tactic is ideal if you want to cover and monitor a truly large area and cannot afford to install a large number of actual devices.
